Junior picks up a top-five finish
MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. - Parker Claxton shot a final-round 64 to surge up the leaderboard as the Georgia Southern men's golf team opened its tournament portion of the schedule at the Gopher Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota.
Claxton led the way in the first round with a one-over 72 and later that day, freshman Thomas Horne improved by 13 shots from his collegiate debut and posted a 1-under 70 in the second round of the event.
The final round was where Claxton made his move as climbed 28 spots on the final day. After a bogey on the opening hole (9th), he rattled off eight birdies over the final 17 holes to card a career-low 64. That score was the lowest of the day by any of the 80 golfers in the field and moved him up to a T5 finish (212; -1). The 64 is the lowest round by an Eagle since Mason Williams shot a 64 in 2022 at the Fighting Irish Classic and the top-five finish is the third of Claxton's collegiate career.
Claxton led the way with 11 birdies while Horne had nine birdies in his first college tournament.
The Eagles as a team showed improvement in each round, cutting 10 shots off their team score from round 1 to round 2, and then improved again in the final round, dropping another nine shots.
Quote from Coach Carter Collins:
"Prep work and the determination were both strong but we were not a good tournament team this week. I didn't prepare them well enough for this course and I need to be a better job for them and this program."
