Eagles tie longest win streak since 2013, finish non-conference schedule 10-1 for the second straight year
STATESBORO- Georgia Southern volleyball (10-1) has tied its longest win streak since 2013 after sweeping Winthrop (3-7) and earning its ninth consecutive victory, hitting over .270 in each set.
"It started from our service line pressure, I thought we did a nice job of going back there and attacking where we needed to," head coach Chad Willis "More importantly, I think we disrupted what they were trying to do offensively. I'm really happy for the group."
Two kills by Reagan Barth and Lydia Seymour started the match and the Eagles remained in rhythm throughout the opener.
Hitting .394, Barth added two more kills and Lexi Duffy recorded her first career kill on a set attack to close it out 25-17.
The second set featured a 4-0 run to begin highlighted by a pair of kills by Maggie Sale. The opposing Eagles never got any closer in the frame as Barth bookended a set where the Eagles hit .342 with a kill.
Winthrop played much closer to the Eagles in the third, holding them around .100 hitting and leading by as much as three. With Winthrop up 9-6, the Eagles went on a much-needed 7-0 run punctuated by a Sam Bowron block and a kill.
Bowron and Seymour recorded a block assist to seal the team's ninth consecutive victory and a 10-1 record in non-conference play, winning the final set 25-18.
While no Eagle reached double figures in kills, the trifecta of Barth (9), Jillian Gray (9) and Sale (8) led the offensive attack. Sale and Seymour both hit .400 on 15 swings as the Eagles hit .336 in the win - holding the opposition to a .104 mark.
Ashlyn Lovett added another 17 digs while Barth (11) and Gray (10) joined her in double digits. Gray notched a season-best three aces in the win.
Setter Kirsten Barrett filled the stat sheet with 24 assists, nine digs, five kills, two aces and a solo block, an all-around effort that she has grown accustomed to this season as her role has expanded.
"It's tough at first to come into a new position, but it's an honor, and I'm very grateful to be in that spot representing Georgia Southern," Barrett said. "I'm just trying to come out every day and do the best I can."
The Eagles have played to a 10-1 non-conference record each of the last two seasons and have won nine in a row for the first time since 9/13-10/1/13. Their 19 consecutive sets won are the most since 10/19-11/7/03, where they won 22 in a row. The program record is 29 straight sets won, which occurred 9/28-10/16/93.
Willis chose his all-tournament squad for the Bash in the Boro:
