Samford Nips Eagles, 1-0, On Sunday

Georgia Southern opens up Sun Belt play on Sunday, hosting App State at Bo Pitts Field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford tallied the match's lone goal in the 24th minute as the Bulldogs collected a 1-0 college women's soccer victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala.

Samford (3-5-1) remained unbeaten all-time against their former SoCon Rivals, improving to 9-0-2 against Georgia Southern (3-5-1). The Eagles will now turn their attention to Sun Belt Conference play, hosting Appalachian State on Sunday, September 22, at 1 p.m. at Bo Pitts Field in Statesboro.

The Eagles recorded the match's first two shots over the first 15 minutes of the match as Meredith Pugh's try in the second minute was just wide of the right post, while Carley Borgelt's shot in the 12th minute was saved by Samford goalkeeper Emma Donley.

Samford scored in the 24th minute as Caroline Donovan's pass found Sarah Holland in the box, and her shot beat Georgia Southern goalkeeper Katie Oakley high for the 1-0 lead.

The Eagles were unable to place a shot on target in the second half as the Bulldogs came up with the win.

The overall shot totals were tied 12-12 between the two teams at match's end. Donley made four saves in net for the Bulldogs, while Oakley made a pair of saves in net for the Eagles. Georgia Southern held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks and the Bulldogs were whistled for 17 fouls and four offsides, while the Eagles were whistled for five fouls and a pair of offsides.
