Eagles and Terriers Battle to Scoreless Draw in Home Opener

STATESBORO -- The Georgia Southern men's soccer team drew 0-0 in their season opening match against Wofford at Tormenta Stadium this Thursday evening (Aug. 22).

The first 10 minutes saw no shots from either team until freshman Ricky Louis rose up high and delivered a header that was placed just high over the bar to get the pace and offense started for both teams. While Georgia Southern had three shots in the opening 45, the Terriers had two of their own that were not on target.

Mitch Picksley finished the match with two shots on goal, with one shaking the crossbar to its core after a powerful right-footed strike just missed the back of the net. The first half also saw six fouls enforced on Wofford, to only one collected by the Eagles.

In half number two, the Terriers pushed on the gas pedal hard, but Georgia Southern was up for the challenge. The Terriers bombarded the net in the final half with nine attempts on net. However, junior captain Nate Martinez proved why he's one of the top keepers in the Sun Belt. After a four save second half, Martinez brings in his fifth clean sheet of his career.

Wofford outshot the Eagles 11-6 outright in the match while also edging out an advantage in corner kicks, 4-3. The whistles were also blown against Wofford in a wide majority as the Terriers were blown for ten fouls to the Eagles four, although the only card of the match was a yellow against the Eagles late in the second half. The result was the first time in series history as a draw in a non-overtime match.

Up next for the Eagles is another home match against FGCU before heading to the Sunshine State for a two-match road stretch. The match against the Eagles is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30 at Bo Pitts Field.
