STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's soccer drew, 0-0, with the University of Florida on Saturday evening in an exhibition contest played at Tormenta Stadium.
The Eagles and the Gators tied for a second consecutive season. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in Gainesville in an exhibition contest last year.
Georgia Southern had two golden chances to score in the first two periods of the three-period tilt. Senior Smith Cathey's long-range shot in the first period hit the crossbar, then Addison Comer's touch-pass to Kyleigh Drew in the second period found the back of the net, but a whistle had sounded for a foul on Comer and the play was pulled back for a free kick.
Florida finished the match with a slim 8-6 edge in shots, while Georgia Southern had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Each team had one save from their goalkeepers and Florida was whistled for nine fouls, compared to five for the Eagles.
"Today was a good start for us," Georgia Southern head women's soccer coach Chris Adams said. "I'm very pleased that we went deep in the bench as we made a lot more changes than customarily we make. I thought, for the most part, everyone who stepped on raised the level or maintained the level of play which is a great sign for us to show that kind of depth. A lot of people impressed me on the day and I think we're very deep at a lot of positions, which is great."
Georgia Southern will open up the 2024 regular season on Thursday, August 15, traveling to the University of Hawai'i for a 7 p.m. HST matchup with the Rainbow Wahine in Honolulu.
