Georgia Southern and Georgia State look to make noise in the Sun Belt
STATESBORO - The Georgia Southern baseball team returns home after five-straight road contests to host the Georgia State Panthers in Sun Belt Conference action. The three-game series will start Friday night at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Georgia Southern comes in to the series with a 15-14 overall record, tied with Appalachian State and Coastal Carolina for fourth in the Sun Belt at 5-4. Most recently, the Eagles played two midweek contests, falling to the College of Charleston on Tuesday but rebounding with a shutout victory over the 22nd-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday. In that contest, the Eagles scored six runs from home runs, including a Sam Blancato grand slam in the second inning, to overwhelm the Gamecocks. The Eagles pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts while only giving up four hits on the night, not allowing any base runners to advance from their bases. It was the first time since the opener against Florida State in the 2014 Tallahassee Regional that the Eagles earned a shutout on the road over a Power 5 opponent.
Georgia State comes into the contest with a 15-13 overall record, sitting at second in the conference with a 7-2 SBC record. Most recently, the Panthers fell in midweek action at Georgia, where the Bulldogs put up 10 runs over the Panthers. Maximus Martin's first inning run was the only score the Panthers would put up on Tuesday.
Georgia Southern is 73-30 all-time against the Panthers, a series that dates all the way back to 1980. Georgia Southern also holds an advantage of being 38-10 against the Panthers in Stateboro. Last season, Georgia State took the series in Decatur, then bounced the Eagles from the first round on the SBC Championship.
This weekend's promotions will see a wide-range of fun activities for fans in attendance. Friday night's contest will be Toy Story Night, with fun activites in the park being Toy Story-themed. Saturday's game is Sitcom Saturday, where you can share some laughs with your friends over all of the sitcom trivia and jokes at J.I. Clements Stadium. Finally, Sunday is Sunday Funday, where kids can enjoy inflatables at the stadium and postgame autographs with the Eagles.
The Eagles will lean on RHP Thomas Higgins to start the series and LHP Ty Fisher on Sunday. Saturday's starter is yet to be named. Georgia State will send out LHP Rob Evans on Friday, RHP Quin McManmon on Saturday, and RHP Baley Coleman on Sunday.
