Softball Sweeps Series Over JMU on Sunday

Eagles record first conference sweep of the season

STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern softball team notched a 4-2 victory over James Madison on Saturday afternoon at Beautiful Eagle Field to sweep the conference series with the Dukes. 

Georgia Southern (27-20, 9-12 SBC) scored four runs on four hits in the fifth inning to take the lead 4-2, as its all it would need to secure the series sweep.

James Madison (29-19, 11-10 SBC) got on the board first in the opening frame after a leadoff base hit the Dukes used an RBI single to take an early 1-0. The Dukes then doubled its lead 2-0 on an RBI single in the second inning. 

Jess Mazur drew a leadoff walk in the fifth before Sam Vinson and Kyla Maxwell hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Pinch runner Brooke Kell scored on a Dukes wild pitch for the Eagles first run of the game. 

Emma Davis drew an infield single scoring Vinson tie the game in the fifth before Katie Perkins continued the rally with a double to left center to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead. Faith Barth extended the Eagle lead to two on an RBI groundout. 

With runners on first and third and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jess Mazur sealed the victory with a diving grab in right center for the final score, 4-2. 

Bailey Holland (7-7) earned the victory in the circle after coming in relief tossing 5.1 innings allowing one unearned one on four hits. Morgan Kendrick picked up her third save of the season after coming into the seventh with one out. 

Davis recorded her 19th multi-hit performance of the season going 2-for-3 with the game tying RBI. Perkins, Vinson, and Maxwell collected hits in the contest.

The Eagles are set to travel to conference rival Appalachian State for its final conference series of the season beginning Thursday, May 2. First pitch from Boone is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
