STATESBORO – Georgia Southern softball secured its first Sun Belt Conference series with a 2-1 win over Georgia State in game one on Sunday afternoon at Beautiful Eagle Field. The Eagles dropped game two 4-3 to move to 19-11 overall and 3-3 in Sun Belt play.
Georgia Southern returns to action on Thursday for a three-game series with Coastal Carolina at Beautiful Eagle Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Game One: Georgia Southern 2, Georgia State 1
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first scoring two runs on three hits.
Emma Davis led off the frame with a hit by pitch and
Faith Barth recorded a double to put runners in scoring position. Back-to-back RBI-singles from
Janai Conklin and
Katie Perkins scored Davis and Barth for the Eagles' two runs.
The Panthers responded in the top of the second frame to cut into the deficit 2-1. After a leadoff triple, Georgia State recorded an RBI sacrifice bunt to plate its lone run of the game.
Alana Barnard tossed her second complete game of the season allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts.
Faith Barth recorded her ninth multi-hit performance of the season going 2-for-3.
Game Two: Georgia Southern 3, Georgia State 4
Georgia State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening frame scoring three runs on four hits. An RBI-double and two-RBI single plated the runs for the Panthers.
The Eagles cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second after
Makayla Brantley recorded her second career hit,
Jess Mazur launched a two-run homer to left field making it 3-2. The home run marked Mazur's sixth bomb of the season.
Georgia Southern tied things up in the in the third when Davis scored on a Panther wild pitch. Davis led off the inning with an infield single before advancing to third on two sacrifice bunts.
The Panthers took the lead for good in the fourth on an RBI single to make the final margin, 4-3.
GS looked to respond in the seventh with a runner in scoring position but an groundout ended the game.
Jess Mazur led the Eagle offense going 2-for-2 with a two-run homer while Davis, Brantley, Barth, and Conklin each recorded one hit on the day.
