Softball Secures 4-3 Win Over Marshall in Sun Belt Opener

The Eagles look to take the series tomorrow at 3 p.m.

HUNTINGTON, WV – Georgia Southern softball (17-7, 1-0 SBC) secured its Sun Belt Conference opener over Marshall 4-3 on Friday night at Dot Hicks Field. 

Faith Barth put the Eagles on the board first launching a three-run homer to dead centerfield to go up 3-0. Emma Davis led of the game laying down an infield single and Jess Mazur reached on a fielder's choice to score on Barth's first home run of the season. 

Marshall answered in the fourth with a pair of runs to cut into the Eagle lead, 3-2. A leadoff single followed by back-to-back hits and an defensive miscue plated the runs. 

The Eagles scored an insurance run in the sixth when Emma Davis used an RBI groundout to score Emily Greek making it 4-2. Greek pinch ran for Dejah Mills who led off the inning with her second hit of the game. 

The Thundering Herd attempted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to cut into the deficit 4-3. 

Anslie Pettit tossed her second consecutive complete game and eighth on the season to earn the victory and move to 8-4 on the season. The freshman allowed three runs scattering nine hits with five strikeouts. 

Davis picked up her eighth multi-hit performance of the season going 2-for-3 and Barth went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI for her seventh multi-hit performance this season to power the Eagle offense. Additionally, Mills went 2-for-3 for her second multi-hit performance of the season. 

Next Up
The Eagles look to take the opening series against Marshall on Saturday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field. First pitch of the contest is set for 3:00 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
