Softball Takes Two on Final Day of Hail Southern Classic

Eagles take on CofC in midweek matchup on Wednesday
STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern softball team (15-7) earned two victories on the final day of the Hail Southern Classic with wins over Buffalo, 3-2, and Winthrop 5-1 on Sunday at Beautiful Eagle Field.
The Eagles wrap up non-conference tournament play hosting College of Charleston at Beautiful Eagle Field on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
Game One: Georgia Southern 3, Buffalo 2
The Bulls struck first in the opening frame to take an early lead, 2-0, on an RBI groundout and solo home run. The two runs in the first would be the Bulls only runs in the contest as Alana Barnard and Bailey Holland scattered eight total hits.
The Eagles cut into the deficit in the fourth when Janai Conklin recorded her first RBI of the season on an RBI single to score Gracie Bellard from second. Bellard recorded an infield single and stole second to get into scoring position.
Georgia Southern would take the lead for good in the fifth frame going up 3-2. Delanie Thames led off with a hit by pitch before advancing to third on a groundout and Faith Barth single. With runners on the corners and one out, Thames scored on obstruction at the plate. One batter later, Jess Mazur knocked in the go ahead run on an RBI single.
Bailey Holland (5-2) picked up the win in relief tossing five scoreless innings allowing four hits and striking out three. Starting pitcher
Alana Barnard worked two innings allowing two runs on four hits and fanning three.
Six Eagles recording hits including Bellard and Thames who went 2-for-3 and 2-for-2, respectively.
Game Two: Georgia Southern 5, Winthrop 1
After three scoreless innings, GS broke the score in the fourth to take the lead 1-0. Barth and Dejah Mills recorded back-to-back hits to put runners on first and second before Sam Vinson recorded an RBI single plating Barth to take the lead for good.
Georgia Southern would stretch its lead out 3-0 in the fifth when Mills recorded her second hit of the day, an RBI single. Bellard and Katie Perkins drew back-to-back hits and Barth drew a six pitch walk to load the bases for Mills.
The offense continued in the sixth as the Eagles scored two runs on two hits. Perkins drove in the first run on an RBI groundout and Mazur plated her 20th RBI of the season on an RBI single scoring the Eagles' final run of the game.
Winthrop threatened in the top of the seventh working the bases loaded then plating its only run of the game, but a 643 double play ended the game.
Anslie Pettit (6-4) was stellar in the circle tossing six scoreless innings scattering four hits and tying her career high of 10 strikeouts.
