
Softball Sweeps Purdue Fort Wayne in Doubleheader

Eagles set to play another two on Saturday
STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern softball team opened the GATA Challenge sweeping Purdue Fort Wayne, 8-0 and 3-1, in a doubleheader on Friday at Beautiful Eagle Field.
The Eagles (7-3) return to Beautiful Eagle Field tomorrow, opening day two of the GATA Challenge against Purdue Fort Wayne 2-9) before its first meeting of the weekend against Presbyterian (5-6).
GAME ONE: Georgia Southern 8, Purdue Fort Wayne 0
Freshmen duo Anslie Pettit (3-2) and Dixiana Sims combined to throw a three-hit shutout. Pettit tossed three complete innings allowing the three Mastodons hits and striking out four. Sims came into relief spinning two hitless innings allowing just one walk and striking out two in her second appearance of the season.
The Eagles offense exploded in the opening frame scoring four runs on three hits. Gracie Bellard and Janai Conklin drew back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Sam Vinson drove in Bellard on an RBI single before Jess Mazur launched a three-run home run to put the Eagles up 4-0.
Georgia Southern extended its lead in the second when Delanie Thames led off the inning with a base hit before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Emma Davis. Gracie Bellard recorded her first hit of the game, a double, to plate Thames making it 1-0.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the third, Bellard tallied her second double of the game to clear the bases and score the final runs of the game. Mazur led off the inning with a walk before Courtney Ball drew a base hit, and Davis walked to load the bases.
GAME TWO: Georgia Southern 3, Purdue Fort Wayne 1
The Mastodons got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning after the leadoff batter reached on an error and advanced to third. Epiphany Hang plated Bailey Manos on a RBI single for its lone run of the game.
Georgia Southern would respond in the bottom of the third tying things up after Thames reached on a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a ground out, Bellard recorded her third hit and fifth RBI on the day plating Thames to tie it, 1-1.
The Eagles would double its lead in the bottom of the fourth when Ball drove in pinch runner Makayla Brantley on an RBI double. Ball recorded her second RBI of the game for insurance in the sixth scoring pinch runner Brooke Kell, making the final score 3-1.
Mazur and Ball led the Eagle offense going 3-for-3 and 4-for-5, respectively in the two games. Mazur tallied 3 RBI in game one and Ball drove in two runs. Bellard went 3-for-5 on the day with 5 RBI.
Alana Barnard (1-0) earned her first win of the season throwing a complete game shutout surrendering one unearned run on two hits and striking out four.
