Eagles return hosting the GATA Challenge
STATESBORO – Anslie Pettit (2-2) tossed a complete game, three hit shutout as Georgia Southern Softball (5-3) run ruled Mercer, 8-0, in six innings on Wednesday night at Beautiful Eagle Field. The freshman used a career high 10 strikeouts, tossing six complete innings and allowing just three hits and a walk.
After three scoreless innings, the Eagles got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back base hits off the bat of Sam Vinson and Katie Perkins put runners into scoring position before Jess Mazur plated pinch runner Makayla Brantley to go up 1-0. Two batters later, Courtney Ball used her first hit of the night to score Perkins from third.
The Eagles doubled its lead, 4-0, in the sixth as Emily Greek and Emma Davis recorded back-to-back hits before Gracie Bellard drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Perkins would plate the first run of the inning on a RBI hit by pitch. Jess Mazur produced an RBI groundout for the Eagles second run of the inning.
In the sixth, Courtney Ball led off the inning with second hit of the night and her first homerun of the season, a solo shot to left field to extend the lead. Kyla Maxwell and Dejah Mills stepped into the box recording back-to-back singles before Davis doubled to continue the scoring. Gracie Bellard would plate the final runs of the game scoring Davis and Greek for the 8-0 score in six innings.
The Bears threatened in the sixth inning with runners advancing to second and third on a wild pitch but back-to-back strikeouts by Pettit ended the Mercer threat.
The GS offense totaled its best offensive performance of the season with 12 hits and tying its highest total runs scored this season. Davis, Vinson, Perkins, and Ball each had multi-hit performances. Bellard, Maxwell, Mills, and Greek each recorded a hit.
