Georgia Southern returns to Statesboro to take on JMU in Sun Belt action on Sunday
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion women's soccer used an early goal to pick up a 1-0 Sun Belt Conference victory over visiting Georgia Southern on Thursday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Complex.
The Monarchs improved to 8-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Sun Belt with the victory, while Georgia Southern fell to 5-8-1 overall and 2-3 in the league. The Eagles return to action on Sunday, hosting James Madison in a 1 p.m. Sun Belt contest at Bo Pitts Field.
The game's only goal came in the 14th minute of the contest. Following an attack by the Eagles, the Monarchs were able to counter as a ball from Andrea Balcazar Algarin found Rhea Kijowski streaking towards the box. Kijowski was one-on-one with keeper Quinn Wilson, and even though Wilson forced Kijowski into a tough angle shot from the left side, Kijowski was able to finish for the 1-0 lead.
Old Dominion held the 1-0 lead into the break, taking a 5-2 shot advantage into halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles apparently equalized in the 56th minute as a corner kick from the left side forced a scramble in front of the net. Ansleigh Crenshaw was able to poke the loose ball into the net, but the official waved off the goal deeming the ball was in the goalkeeper's possession at the time.
Old Dominion finished the contest with an 11-5 edge in shots. Wilson made four saves in net for the Eagles, while Emily Bredek tallied three saves for the Monarchs. ODU had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks and the Eagles were whistled for nine fouls on the day, with the Monarchs being whistled for eight fouls and three offsides.
