Eagles hold Troy to an .096 hitting percentage, extend set win streak to 28
STATESBORO- Georgia Southern volleyball (13-1, 3-0 SBC) pushed its win streak to 12 and set win streak to 28 after a clean sweep of Troy (7-8, 2-3) at Hanner Fieldhouse on Thursday, holding the visitors to a sub-.100 hitting percentage.
"One of our goals was to put service pressure on Troy, and we definitely caused them some disruption there," head coach Chad Willis said. "They focused pretty well on Reagan, which we knew would happen from a scouting perspective, but when you have four others behind her that can step up, that's great depth, and that paid dividends for us tonight."
The Eagles struggled briefly in the early portion of the set, trailing as much as 7-3 before a run featuring a trio of Reagan Barth aces put the Eagles back up top.
Tied at 17, Paige Powers recorded three kills and a block assist to force a Trojans timeout. After a short 3-0 run when the Eagles got to set point by the visitors, a service error quelled the rally and got the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
It was the Eagles who went on an early streak to begin the second set, as four Troy errors put the Eagles in front 8-2.
Troy did not get closer than two points for the remainder of the set. All told, the Trojans recorded nine errors to the Eagles' three in the frame as Barth's fifth ace of the match closed the set out 25-17. The Trojans hit just .027 (10-9-37) in the second stanza.
Maggie Sale's block made it an early 12-7 lead in the third frame as the Eagles stymied the visitors.
Another nine Trojan errors in the set, including one on the final play, a block assist by Sale and Jillian Gray, spelled yet another sweep for Georgia Southern this season.
Barth led the way with 11 kills, joined by Powers and Sale, who both had seven. Sale added four blocks to the game, continuing her strong start to the season in the blocking category.
"We did a great job of staying connected early and not letting the slow start faze us," Sale said. "We were able to bounce back from that, and I think that shows how engaged we were for the entire game tonight."
Ashlyn Lovett paced the Eagles again with 15 digs, while Gray's 13 were a new career-high. Barth added five aces to her performance in the win.
The Eagles extended their win streak to 12, tied for the longest since 10/8-11/17/13. The team also extended the longest active set win streak in the NCAA to 28, one behind the program record of 29 set in 1993 before rally scoring was introduced.
Willis moves to within two wins of J.B. Claiborne on the all-time list with his 81st victory and will look to get one closer on Friday as the Eagles have a chance to make history at 6:00 p.m.
