MACON, Ga. - Georgia Southern men's tennis notched its first win of the Spring on Wednesday, defeating Mercer by a 6-1 score in Macon.
The Eagles (1-4) picked up a fifth straight win over the in-state rival Bears (1-5) and will now return to Statesboro, opening up their home slate on Wednesday, February 7, with a 1 p.m. matchup against in-state foe Kennesaw State at the Wallis Tennis Center. The win was also the first collegiate head coaching victory for Andrew Goodwin, who took over the helm of Georgia Southern men's tennis in May.
Georgia Southern claimed the doubles point from the Bears with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Pol del Castillo and Dimitris Paliouras collected a 7-6 (6) win over Andrew Branicki and Lucas Dini at the top doubles spot, while Judson Blair and Pierre Mouesca claimed a 6-3 win over Marceau Fouilhoux and Nemanja Stefanovic at No. 2 doubles.
The Eagles then clinched the victory with straight-set singles wins at four spots. Castillo downed Samuel MacLeod, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles and Paliouras collected a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dini at No. 2 singles. Blair defeated Fouilhoux, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 4 singles and Matthew Mitchell knocked off Branicki, 7-5, 7-6 (2) at No. 6 singles.
With the match clinched, Mouesca prevailed in a 10-point third-set tiebreaker to down Stefanovic, 7-6 (5), 4-6, (13-11) for the final margin.
