Big Comebacks Highlight 4-3 Win At Elon For Men's Tennis

Matthew Mitchell and Willy Mirarchi overcome 5-0 deficit in doubles, help GS claim third straight win
ELON, N.C. - Georgia Southern men's tennis used an incredible doubles comeback to clip Elon, 4-3, in non-conference action on Friday in Elon, N.C.
The Eagles move to 9-6 on the season with their fourth straight victory, while Elon falls to 4-10. Georgia Southern will take on No. 56 Old Dominion in a Noon matchup that will be played on the campus of Elon on Saturday.
The doubles point looked to be going the way of the home team even though Albert Saar and Albert Widell claimed a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Elon's top doubles team took a 6-4 win at No. 1 and the No. 3 duo of Oskar Antinhelmo and Rafael Ymer led Georgia Southern's duo of Willy Mirarchi and Matthew Mitchell by a 5-0 score. But Mirarchi and Mitchell won five straight games to even the match up at 5-all, then prevailed in a tiebreaker, collecting a 7-6 (3) win and the doubles point for the Eagles.
That would be significant as singles play was very even between the two schools. Elon would win straight set singles matches at the top three spots, while Mirarchi would win a 6-3, 6-2 match at No. 4 singles. Widell shook off a rough second set to prevail, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 5 singles to even the match up at 3-all. Mitchell then delivered the match clincher with a come-from-behind 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
"You never know when it is going to be your day to step up," Georgia Southern head men's tennis coach Andrew Goodwin said. "I'm proud of how our guys dug in and fought, no matter how the situation looked. Ege [Cankus] is one of the best coaches in the country and Matthew Mitchell embodies what it means to be an Eagle."
