STATESBORO - Georgia Southern tallied a goal in each half to pick up a 2-0 women's soccer exhibition victory over visiting Kennesaw State on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Eagles will open up the 2023 regular season on Thursday, traveling to Birmingham, Ala., to take on UAB at 8 p.m. ET
Georgia Southern opened up the scoring in the 14th minute as Simone Timm drove down the left side of the box and crossed it to Bri Conley, who finished inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.
The Eagles then capitalized on a bit of good fortune in the second half to double the lead. Kennesaw State goalkeeper Allanah Byle played a ball from outside of the box across her own goal, and Georgia Southern's Emma Armstrong pounced on the errant pass and scored into the empty net for the 2-0 advantage.
Georgia Southern finished the match with a 17-6 edge in shots over the Owls, and a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
"I think we created a lot of opportunities on the day," Georgia Southern Head Women's Soccer Coach Chris Adams said. "And we made a couple of them count, which is a good sign. We were able empty the bench, play everybody and not have the standard drop off too much. My only challenge to them is going to try and get them to have a killer instinct, to put the other team away a little earlier. We let them hang around for a long time. In the first half, I think we could have been up 3-0. But ll in all, a 2-0 result at home with everyone playing is a great sign."
