Eagles Drop Series Opener to No. 17 Coastal Carolina, 10-4

CONWAY, S.C. – The Georgia Southern baseball team dropped the first contest in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series to the 17th-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 10-4, on Thursday night at Springs Brooks Stadium.

The Chanticleers (19-8, 8-2 SBC) scored in every inning until the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Eagles (14-16, 5-5 SBC), starting with two runs scored in the bottom of the first inning, followed by a single run in the bottom of the second inning. A two-run homer by CCU in the bottom of the third inning put the Chanticleers up 5-0, and a 3-4 putout at first base gave the Chanticleers another RBI and a 6-0 lead over Georgia Southern. Coastal Carolina continued the scoring by scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and two runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.

Georgia Southern was able to prevent a shutout and scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, when Jarrett Brown and Noah Ledford worked the count and earned bases-loaded walks to cut the lead to 10-2. In the top of the eighth inning, the Eagles continued to chip away at the Chanticleers lead, first with a JP Tighe RBI-single that brought home Blake Evans, followed up with a Sam Blancato sac fly to left field to score JD Kaiser. Once the road half of the eighth inning ended, neither team would score again, finalizing the 10-4 final in favor of the Chanticleers.
