STATESBORO - The University of North Florida halted the No. 74-ranked Georgia Southern women's tennis team's seven-match win streak with a narrow 4-3 victory over the Eagles on Wednesday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles fall to 7-2 on the season, while North Florida improves to 6-4. UNF improves to 16-0 all-time against Georgia Southern, but today's match is the first time in the series where the Eagles won three singles matches against the Ospreys.
North Florida captured the doubles point by sweeping all three doubles matches from the Eagles.
In singles, each team won three first sets. The Ospreys pushed their lead to 2-0 with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles, but the Eagles battled back as reigning SBC Player of the Week Nanaka Kijima picked up a straight-set singles win at No. 5 singles. Lindsay Tulenko also notched a straight-set win at No. 3 singles, but North Florida pushed its lead to 3-2 with a straight-set singles win at No. 4 singles.
The match was decided in three sets as Jasmin Makela came from a one-set deficit to defeat Paula Hijos, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. Silvia Martinez earned a three-set win over Megan Forster at No. 2 singles for the 4-3 victory.
"I was very happy with the fight we showed today in singles," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "North Florida is an extremely good team. They beat Kansas State earlier on the year and nearly upset No. 5 Auburn last week, losing 4-3. We saw this as an opportunity and I truly believe in singles, we did a great job of playing at an extremely high level and fighting for every point. We ultimately lost by the smallest of margins. But we can be proud of the effort and passion we showed today. I truly believe our best days are still ahead of us."
Georgia Southern returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Tallahassee to take on Florida A&M at 10 a.m.
