Seven-part feature catches up with GS baseball players on summer league teams

STATESBORO – 18 Georgia Southern baseball players have kept busy after the conclusion of the baseball season by playing in various summer baseball leagues around the country. For the next week and a half, we will be checking in on our players and seeing how they are performing over the summer. For today, we will be looking at RHP Thomas Ross in the Appalachian League.

The Appalachian League is a summer collegiate baseball league that is also a part of the MLB and the USA Baseball Prospect Development Pipeline. The Appalachian League has been through a few iterations, including a 64-year stint as a Minor League Baseball team, but in 2021, the organization restructured to become a summer baseball league. The league is home to 10 teams, housed in two five-team divisions.

Georgia Southern RHP Thomas Ross is a member of the Burlington Sock Puppets, located in Burlington, North Carolina. For the 2022 season so far, Ross has posted a 1-0 record with one save and a 4.00 ERA. He has appeared in eight games and has worked 18.0 innings, fanning 19 batters and only walking eight. Ross is carrying a WHIP of 1.50.

Ross had one of his best outings of the summer during a June 23 game against the Johnson City Doughboys, where he came in relief during the top of the seventh and eighth innings, not allowing a hit and sitting down three Doughboys in the process. He lowered his season ERA to 1.50 after that outing, and the Sock Puppets won 17-0.

As of July 20, the Sock Puppets lead the Appalachian League with a 31-11 record. The second place team, the Kingsport Axmen, is 3.5 games behind. The closest team in the East division, the Pulaski River Turtles, is 11 games being the Sock Puppets.
