Eagles Rally to Sweep Troy, 10-9

Georgia Southern sweeps Troy for the first time in program history

STATESBORO - Three runs scored by the Georgia Southern baseball team in the bottom of the seventh inning helped it power past Troy on Sunday afternoon at J.I. Clements Stadium by a final score of 10-9.

Both sides traded two run half-innings in the beginning of the game, with Georgia Southern (32-15, 18-6 SBC) getting the first two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a Christian Avant sac fly to plate Jesse Sherrill, and a Noah Ledford single bringing Jason Swan home. Troy (29-17, 13-11 SBC) would tie the game up in the top of the second inning, but the Eagles would plate two more in the bottom half of the second frame with a Sam Blancato home run to left field, and a sac fly from Swan to give Sherrill his second run of the game.

The Trojans would plate six runs in the top of the fourth inning, including bringing four runners home on a grand slam, taking a 8-4 lead. The Eagles would narrow the gap to only one in the bottom of the fourth with a Parker Biederer single to score JP Tighe, a RBI-triple from Blancato to score Biederer, and a Swan RBI-double to bring home Sherrill a third time. The Eagles would take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, when a fielder's choice brought home Jarrett Brown, tying the game at eight runs each. Sherrill's double down the left field line would score Tighe and Blancato with the go-ahead runs, giving GS its first lead since the top of the fourth inning.

Troy would score one more run in the top of the eighth inning to close the gap, and threatened in the ninth inning with runners on the corners. Danny Madden's two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work would help seal the sweep for the Eagles and give Madden his second save of the season. Jake Martin would earn his third win of the season with 3.2 innings of work, only giving up one run and keeping the Trojan offense quiet.
