MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 2 seed Georgia Southern baseball team begins its road in the Sun Belt Conference Championship with a second-round game against the No. 9 seed App State Mountaineers. First pitch from Riverwalk Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m. ET.
The Eagles and the Mountaineers met earlier this season to open Sun Belt play in Boone, NC. Georgia Southern would win the first two games of that series to clinch the series, but App State would win the third game to avoid the sweep on the mountain.
The Sun Belt Conference Championship began as a single-elimination tournament, with two "play-in" games to determine who No. 1 seed Texas State and No. 2 seed Georgia Southern matched up with. In the first game, No. 10 seed ULM upset No. 7 seed Georgia State, 8-5, to secure the matchup with Texas State, and in the second game, No. 9 seed App State used a six-run top of the sixth inning to power past No. 8 seed Little Rock, 10-3. Georgia Southern would draw the highest remaining seed, and Texas State would draw the lowest remaining seed.
From now until the championship game on Sunday, May 29, the tournament will take a double-elimination format, where teams who fall will be given a second chance to try and make it to the championship game. If Georgia Southern beats App State, they will face the winner of No. 6 seed Troy and No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina. If Georgia Southern falls, they will face the loser of the afore-mentioned game.
