STATESBORO - Georgia Southern women's tennis defeated Florida A&M by a 7-0 score on Friday morning at the Wallis Tennis Center.
The Eagles moved to 11-8 overall on the season with the victory, while Florida A&M falls to 6-13. Georgia Southern returns to Sun Belt action on Sunday, visiting Arkansas State for an 11 am contest against the Red Wolves in Jonesboro, Ark.
Georgia Southern collected the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Hannah Daniel and Sophie Wagemaker blanked Susan Salinas and Claudia Sumaia, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles, then Elizabeth Goines and Sonja Keranen downed Aylen Hubeaut and Sierra Sandy, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, the Eagles got straight set wins in all six matches to collect the 7-0 win.
"Florida A&M has some very talented players on their squad," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "They know how to put up a fight, and we did a good job of controlling most of our points. I'm happy with our doubles effort from Liz/Sonja and Hannah/Sophie. They stayed steady and set each other up really well.
"We also did a good job of dealing with the wind as we controlled our singles matches," McCaffrey said. "Sophie was impressive today and executed her game to near perfection. Pauli still continues to do a great job out-hustling so many of her opponents. And we all love seeing Mila work her points as she plays such an intellectual game. Now our focus is on a really scrappy Arkansas State team on Sunday."
