Red Wolves capture the doubles point, each team claims three singles wins
JONESBORO, Ark. - Arkansas State used the doubles point to edge Georgia Southern, 4-3, in Sun Belt Conference action on Sunday at the Arkansas State Tennis Complex in Jonesboro, Ark.
The Red Wolves improve to 6-13 overall and 2-7 in the Sun Belt with the victory, while Georgia Southern falls to 11-9 overall and 3-5 in the league. The Eagles begin the final week of regular season action by traveling to Atlanta to take on Georgia State on Friday, April 15, at 10 a.m.
Arkansas State picked up a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles and a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles to collect the doubles point. That would prove to be the difference in the match as each team would record three singles wins.
Silvia Martinez Jimenez picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Thea Rice at No. 1 singles, while Sophie Wagemaker delivered a 6-3, 6-4 win over Hunter Roper at No. 4 singles. Elizabeth Goines notched a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sofia Vdovychenko at No. 5 singles to wrap up the Eagles' points on the day.
"It's tough to win on the road in this conference," Georgia Southern Head Women's Tennis Coach Sean McCaffrey said. "Our team has battled so hard all season, and have fought to the end in every match. This was no different. Arkansas State came up tough in the end. We have done such a great job of closing out matches over the last few years, including this year with some clutch performances. This time, we were just a little unlucky. Our ladies know how to fight and we will continue to do so in the future."
