MOBILE - South Alabama softball edged Georgia Southern, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in Mobile to collect a series win from the Eagles.
The Jaguars improve to 22-17 overall and 14-4 in the Sun Belt, while Georgia Southern falls to 11-31 and 4-16 in the league. The final game of the series will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
South Alabama took advantage of a first-inning error by the Eagles to plate a pair of runs and take an early 2-0 lead.
Georgia Southern starter Rylee Waldrep (5-13) kept the Jaguar bats in check, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning. She gave up only two hits on the day, one being a solo home run by Kamdyn Kvistad in the sixth inning that pushed the South Alabama lead to 3-0.
The Eagles rallied in the top of the seventh, getting a leadoff double by Courtney Ball, then an RBI double by Faith Shirley to cut the gap to 3-1. The double was the 38th of Shirley's career, putting her in a tie with Ashley Flemming (1996-99) for fifth on the all-time doubles chart at Georgia Southern.
South Alabama hurler Jenna Hardy (8-8) retired the next batter to finish off the complete-game win. Hardy gave up five hits and one run, striking out three for the Jaguars. Waldrep finished the day with just two hits given up, walking two while striking out four.
