STATESBORO – Kaden Archie hit the go-ahead bucket with 19 seconds on the clock, and Georgia Southern made it hold up with a defensive stop for its second straight one-point Sun Belt men's basketball victory, a 58-57 triumph over South Alabama Thursday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.
Archie drove to the basket, and his runner kissed off the glass and in as the shot clock expired to put the Eagles up by one point. Diante Smith's 3-point try from the corner was short for South Alabama, and
Elijah McCadden and Archie tied up Kayo Goncalves on the rebound, giving the Eagles the ball under the Jags' basket with 1.5 seconds remaining.
Archie threw a three-quarter court pass to
Cam Bryant, who caught it and heaved it towards the Georgia Southern basket as time expired.
Eagles of the Game
Archie finished the contest with seven points, four assists and a steal, and Bryant collected 10 points, a rebound and two assists.
Gedi Juozapaitis tallied 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Andrei Savrasov totaled nine points and eight rebounds,
Prince Toyambi chipped in nine points and six boards and
Kamari Brown notched nine points and four rebounds.
Key Moments
After overcoming a 15-point second-half deficit, South Alabama (15-7, 5-4) took its first lead of the game with 47.7 seconds left on a Javon Franklin dunk off Tyrell Jones assist. That would not last long as Archie made his runner on the Eagles' next possession, just 28.7 seconds later.
The Eagles (11-9, 4-5) held South Alabama to 1 for 6 from the field and forced five turnovers to start the game while jumping out to a 15-3 lead. GS made 7 of its first 10 from the floor at the other end and held a 38-23 cushion at halftime.
The Jags used a 15-4 run, keyed by consecutive 3-pointers from Goncalves, to trim the margin to 48-46 midway through the second period.
