LYNCHBURG, Va. - Bolstered by a gold medal and school-record performance in the 200 IM, the Georgia Southern Swimming & Diving wrapped up its first day of competition at the CCSA Championships Wednesday evening, sitting in fifth place with 206 points.

Amy Hornyak won the 200 IM with a school-record time of 2:00.08, becoming the first Eagle swimmer to win a race at the conference championship since 2012 when Courtney Harrison won the 200 breaststroke and Kristen Bates won the 100 breaststroke. Hornyak bested her own record time, which previously stood at 2:01.56.

Abby Schoppa finished 24th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.93.

The Eagles started finals by placing fourth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.27 as the team of Emma Scruggs, Hornyak, Tori Rucker and Abby Wenham earned 58 points. The group also qualified for the National Invitiational Championship.

In the 500 freestyle, Zuri Clavo finished ninth with a time of 5:05.72. Madie Banks swam her college best in the race and finished 22nd with a time 5:08.47. Emma Sutton finished 25th, swimming the race in 5:14.55.

Wenham swam the 50 freestyle final in 23.52 seconds, finishing eighth.

In prelims of the 200 IM, Hornyak swam a time of 2:04.34 and tied the third-best time in school history.

In 3-meter diving, all three Eagles finished in the top-16. Anya Weber finished 10th with a score 238.35. Marissa Santos finished 15th with a 202.80 and Megan Phifer finished right behind in 16th place with a score of 198.30.

In 50 freestyle prelims, Melody Giberson swam a college best with a time of 24.42.  Wenham also swam a college best at 23.59.

"Really proud of how our women competed today, from the boards to the pool," said Head Coach Amanda Caldwell. "It was great to have A final performances in 3 out of 4 individual events. We haven't done that in a long time. Our 200 medley relay moving up 4 spots and qualifying for NIC, Amy's 200 IM being the first conference individual champ for GS in 10 years, and Abby's swimming another LTB in the 50 free were great ways to cap off Day 1. Looking to carry that energy and momentum into Day 2."

The CCSA Championships continue Thursday with Day Two. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., with the Finals at 6 pm. Final events on Thursday include the 200 freestyle relay, the 100 butterfly, the 400 IM, the 200 freestyle, and the 400 medley relay.
