• Georgia Southern finishes what has become a six-match road swing at Marshall this weekend. The teams meet Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at noon.
• The Eagles are coming off a pair of losses at Coastal Carolina last weekend, while Marshall suffered a pair of losses at Troy.
• Marshall leads the all-time series, which began in 1992, 7-3, and this is the first meeting between the teams since 1996. The Thundering Herd has won the last five meetings against the Eagles.
• Georgia Southern had two home matches against Old Dominion canceled two weekends ago because of Hurricane Ian and has not played a home contest since Sept. 17.
• GS is 3-3 on the road this season and 5-5 away from home (road and neutral). Marshall is 3-6 at home this season.
• Georgia Southern ranks fourth in the country in opponents' hitting percentage (.146), and the Eagles rank second in the Sun Belt in aces (1.79/set) and fourth in digs (15.04/set).
•
Ashlyn Lovett ranks ninth in the nation and leads the Sun Belt in aces (0.64/set). The sophomore is third in the Sun Belt in digs (4.47/set), while
Emily Jarome is sixth in the Sun Belt in kills (3.57/set).
• Georgia Southern returned 15 letterwinners, including 2021 first-team All-Sun Belt selection
Baylor Bumford and Freshman of the Year
Ashlyn Lovett. The Eagles were picked third in the East Division in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, and Bumford garnered preseason all-league accolades.
• Bumford is 21 blocks shy of 300 for her career, and Lovett notched her 500th career dig at the Tussle in the Triad Sept. 2.
• The Eagles' roster has been bolstered by three transfers who are making an impact this season. Jarome was a three-time All-CAA selection at Towson and led the Tigers to three CAA Tournament Championships and subsequent NCAA Tournament appearances. Jarome's Eagle debut was her 100th career match, and she has 1,222 career kills, 886 digs, 195 blocks and 93 aces.
Grace Underwood, Jarome's club teammate on East Coast Power, transferred from Delaware and has 266 career kills and 181 blocks.
Callaway Cason transferred from Ole Miss and ranks fifth in the Sun Belt in assists (9.43/set). Bumford is also a transfer, having come to Georgia Southern from UNCW prior to the 2019 season.
• After more than a month on the road, Georgia Southern will return to Hanner Fieldhouse to host in-state rival Georgia State next weekend. Friday's contest starts at 6 p.m., and Saturday's match begins at 1 p.m.
