Men’s Basketball Begins Team Practice

STATESBORO – The energy in the gym was contagious as the Georgia Southern men's basketball team held its first official team practices last week in Hanner Fieldhouse.
"I'm ecstatic and the guys are excited as well," said head coach Brian Burg. "There's a lot of energy in the building. We return nine letterwinners, we have a quality recruiting class and guys have been bought in all summer long."
For most of the summer, the Eagles have been on campus taking classes and participating in offseason workouts, which they could not do last year because of the COVID protocols in place. Having nine returners who have an understanding of Burg's offensive and defensive systems and being able to have the team workouts allotted by the NCAA in the spring and summer has put the Eagles ahead of where they were at this time last season.
"It's evident guys who are returners know our concepts, they know our system from a technical standpoint and they are getting better," said Burg. "Our newcomers are coming along and gelling with the returners. This summer has allowed us to really get our team better on both sides of the basketball."
Burg opened the first workout last Tuesday by pointing out that they only have 30 practices before the season opener Nov. 9, and how important it is to make each practice session count. The Eagles went about two hours each day and spent a lot of time on defense, which Burg identified as a point of emphasis this preseason.
"Our focus will be establishing our defensive identity and understanding how we play schematically - every player on the roster truly understanding how we play – and then getting cohesiveness on the offensive end and continuing to get better," said Burg. "The effort has been there all summer long and now from a technical standpoint, we'll try to clean some things up while also focusing on our defensive identity."
The Eagles will open the campaign by hosting Ball State Nov. 9, in Hanner Fieldhouse in the fourth meeting between the schools and first since 1975. Georgia Southern begins its Sun Belt slate with a trip to Arkansas to face Little Rock and Arkansas State Dec. 30 and Jan. 1. The Eagles' first home conference weekend is set for Jan. 6-8, when the Eagles play host to Texas State and UTA.
Season tickets are priced as low as $100, and season ticket renewals are underway. New season ticket sales will begin Monday, Oct. 11.
