STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern track and field team is Birmingham bound for the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex Monday and Tuesday.
Action begins Monday for the Eagles at 12:00 p.m. with the women's shot put.
Indoor Season Review
Leading the Eagles during the 2020 season have been a pair of Ugandan sophomores in
Scovia Ayikoru and
Merabu Nagwandala. The duo has broken multiple Georgia Southern indoor records including their own several times over.
As it stands, Nagwandala holds the indoor school record in the 3000m (9:54.96) and the 5000m (17:46.59) both of which she posted in 2020. The marks stand at fifth and sixth in the conference entering the meet. The sophomore won the 5000m outdoor title in 2019.
Ayikoru enters the championship meet as the indoor school record holder in the 400m (55.46) and as second all-time in the 200m (24.36). The times rank third and first in the Sun Belt this season. She also ranks sixth in the 60m dash.
In total, the Eagles hold seven top-10 marks in the conference. Along with Ayikoru and Nagwandala,
Zykeria Williams ranks 10
th in the 60m hurdles (8.71) and the distance medley relay team of
Carley Braman,
Mia Colucci,
Ellunde Montgomery and
Mattie Harris rank fourth (12:59.81).
At the 2019 SBC Indoor Championships, the team placed 10
th with 18 points. The top performer was former Eagles
Alexis Gant with a pair of sixth place finishes in the weight throw and shot put.
