FORT MYERS, Fla. - No. 18-ranked Florida Gulf Coast handed the visiting Georgia Southern men's soccer team its first loss of the 2019 season with a 5-1 victory over the Eagles in Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday afternoon.
The host Eagles improved to 3-0-1 on the season with the win, while the visiting Eagles fell to 2-1 on the year. Georgia Southern will play the second of its three straight road matches in Florida on Friday, September 13, visiting North Florida for a 7 p.m. contest in Jacksonville.
For a third straight match, Georgia Southern scored the first goal of the match in quick fashion. Josh Deane's cross from the right side found reigning Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week Alhaji Tambadu in the box. Tambadu finished for his fourth goal of the season in the sixth minute of the match for the early 1-0 GS lead.
Florida Gulf Coast equalized in the 14th minute with a goal by O'Vonte Mullings, then took a 2-1 lead into halftime on an Alden Jokomba goal off of a corner kick in the 42nd minute.
"We weren't at the races today, so it was a pretty disappointing result," Georgia Southern Head Men's Soccer Coach John Murphy said. "The little details at this level are important, so it's back to the drawing board this week. We will use our time as best we can to prepare for our game this Friday at North Florida."
The host Eagles then claimed the victory with three second-half goals and finished the match with a 21-9 edge in shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Jokull Blaengsson made a career-high 10 saves in net for Georgia Southern, while FGCU's Gustavo Vasconcelos turned aside five shots. GS was whistled for eight fouls, with six for FGCU, and the host Eagles ahd a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
