Georgia Southern Swimming & Diving to Give Swim Clinics to Community

STATESBORO –The Georgia Southern swimming & diving program will host free water safety and swimming clinics to community members of all ages this Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Recreational Activity Center at 11 a.m.
"Our team believes that drowning prevention is an important cause to be aware of in our Statesboro community," said head coach Amanda Caldwell. "This clinic will be an opportunity for kids of all ages and swimming experiences to come spend time with our team, learn survival skills, the importance of water safety and more fundamentals in the sport of swimming."
"We are passionate about our sport and want others to love it too," senior swimmer Ashley Kubel said. "We also feel like drowning is a prevalent issue and something parents in the Statesboro area need to be aware of. A lot of accidents come from fear rather than knowledge of water safety and how to prevent those things from happening. We love swimming so some of the purpose is to share that love with others, but also we want to be able to share tips and help people learn how to be comfortable in the water to prevent accidents from happening."
There will be two 30-minute sessions. The 11:30 a.m. session is for kids aged 3–11. You can sign up for this session here.
The second session is for ages 12 and up and will start at 12:10. The registration for the second session can be found here.
"We are doing this for all ages because it's important for people, no matter their age, to know to be safe," Isabelle Bray said. It isn't uncommon to hear of college-aged students or adults drowning because they have never been taught how to swim."
Both sessions will be capped at 20 participants in order to receive one-on-one attention from a team member.
The team is making this effort a monthly commitment to the community and has scheduled future sessions for Oct. 5 and Nov. 9. More details on those sessions and sign-up links will be available in coming weeks.
"It's something that is second nature to us," Kubel said. "Most of the team, throughout high school and even during the summers, teach swim lessons so we understand the need for this type of program. It's a good way to combine our love for swimming with community service."
