GAME NOTES
- Georgia Southern Baseball welcomes Georgia to town for the teams' annual weekend series. The Eagles face a ranked opponent for the second time in a weekend series, winning one of three against No. 15 Auburn to open the 2019 season.
- Georgia Southern clipped the high-flying College of Charleston Cougars, who entered with a 6-1 record, behind seven innings of two hit, shutout ball from
Tyler Owens. The Eagle bats came alive, pounding out 10 hits while earning eight walks and taking four HBPs. Georgia Southern took the 8-0 win on Tuesday, handing Owens his first Division I win in his Georgia Southern debut.
- Georgia Southern trails 50-56-1 in the all-time series that dates back to April 8, 1957 when the Eagles took a 6-4 win in Statesboro. The Eagles took all three games in 2015 in Statesboro. Since then, the Eagles have only won three of the last nine games.
- The Georgia Southern pitching staff has stepped up to cover for an Eagle offense that has struggled at times to score runs in 2019. The Eagle defense has answered the bell with back-to-back shutouts on Feb. 23 vs. West Virginia and Feb. 26 at College of Charleston. Starting pitchers allowed six total hits between those games. The back-to-back shutouts are the first since the Eagles blanked their opponent in back-to-back games at the Sun Belt Tournament in San Marcos. The Eagles downed UTA (5/26/16) and South Alabama (5/27/16).
- Junior
Tyler Owens opened his account with the Eagles in splendid fashion on February 26 against the College of Charleston. Owens tossed seven innings of two hit, shutout ball to earn his first Division I win. He didn't issue a walk and fanned five. The offense had his back, scoring a season-high eight runs in the win.
- Senior transfer
Daniel Collins had a second quality start of the season in the series finale against West Virginia. He shackled the Mountaineers, holding them to just four hits over his six shutout innings of work. Collins struck out five and carries an 0.82 ERA into his next start, this weekend against Georgia.
- Georgia Southern's 2019 home opener, originally slated for Tuesday, February 19th, was rained out due to a persistent drizzle that kept the tarp on the field. The teams are currently working to arrange a new date for the game, but no announcement has been made.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will continue a run of seven-straight games at home on Wednesday night when Mercer roars down I-16 to Statesboro for a midweek contest. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+ and the Georgia Southern Sports Network.
