Cross Country Preview: Eagles Set Sights on Sun Belt Championship Meet

Georgia Southern heads to NCAA South Regional Nov. 15
STATESBORO – The Georgia Southern cross country team heads to the Sun Belt Conference Championship meet Saturday at Nash Farm Battlefield Park in Hampton.
The Eagles will run a 5K race at approximately 10:00 a.m.
The team is led by sophomore Merabu Nagwandala who has been the top Eagle finisher in every meet of the season. The Kampala, Uganda native took gold in both home meets, ninth at the FSU Invitational and fifth at the Sand Shark Invitational. She was voted XC women's runner of the week by the SBC for her performance at FSU. Nagwandala set a XC school record 5K time of 17:58.8 at the Sand Shark Invitational in her most recent race.
Carley Braman and Mattie Harris have both finished as the second and third Eagles across the finish line in every meet of the season.
The Eagles finished ninth as a team in last season's SBC championship meet with Nagwandala leading the scorers at 21st. The best SBC finish for Georgia Southern was sixth in 2015 with 169 points. Appalachian State is the reigning women's team champion, scoring 45 points last season.
Saturday's race will award a point in the 2019-20 Georgia Southern vs. Georgia State Rivalry Series. The Eagles currently lead this year's series 2.0-0 following a men's soccer win Oct. 12 and a women's soccer win Oct. 13.
The Eagles will travel to Tallahassee Nov. 15 for the NCAA South Regional Championship. Florida State University will play host to the event for the second straight year at the Apalachee Regional Park outside of Florida's capitol city.
