2016-17 Commissioner's List | 2016-17 Academic Honor Roll

NEW ORLEANS - More than 2,100 Sun Belt Conference student-athletes, including 195 Georgia Southern student-athletes, were named to the 2016-17 Commissioner's List and Academic Honor Roll as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon. The list is comprised of 1,087 student-athletes on the Commissioner's List and 1,044 student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll list.

Georgia Southern ranked second in the conference with 100 student-athletes on the Honor Roll, while 95 were named to the Commissioner's List. The Eagles had the second-most student-athletes between the two lists with 195 total. 

The Commissioner's List honors student-athletes who maintained a 3.5 grade point average or better during the 2016-17 academic year while the Academic Honor Roll honors those student-athletes who maintained a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 for the academic year.

The Georgia Southern women's basketball and men's tennis teams earned Sun Belt Conference Team GPA Awards for the 2016-17 academic year. The awards, released at the conclusion of the academic year, honor the teams with the top cumulative team grade point average in each of the sponsored sports within the Sun Belt. For award purposes, indoor and outdoor track & field are counted as a single sport.

Women's basketball carried a 3.28 team GPA for 2016-17 to earn the honor for the second straight year. The Eagles' 3.28 GPA was higher than last year's top mark of 3.23 GPA and collectively, all eight of Georgia Southern's women's sports featured GPAs of 3.10 or higher.

Men's tennis, meanwhile, carried a 3.51 team GPA for the 2016-17 year, highlighted by three student-athletes achieving a 3.0 or higher, five achieving a 3.5 or higher, and one achieving a 4.0. Five Eagles were named to the ITA Scholar-Athlete list following their success in the classroom.

Among all Sun Belt institutions, women's soccer had the largest number of student-athletes on the SBC Commissioner's List with 152 followed by women's track and field/cross country, which had 141. Football led all sports on the Academic Honor Roll as 252 student-athletes were named to the list. Women's track and field/cross country was second with 133 on the Academic Honor Roll.

The nearly 400 student-athletes who make up the Georgia Southern Athletics Department earned a 3.01 GPA for the 2016-2017 academic year, and the mark matches last year's GPA of 3.01, which was the first time in school history that the student-athletes had reached the 3.0 threshold. Last spring, GS student-athletes recorded a 3.10, the highest single-semester GPA in the history of GS athletics. Two hundred and forty student-athletes made the Georgia Southern academic Honor Roll, which accounts for over 65 percent of the department. Forty-three of those student-athletes posted a 4.0 GPA to earn a spot on the President's List, while 86 students made the Dean's List with a GPA of 3.5-3.99. Another 111 made the honor roll for posting a 3.00-3.49 GPA for the semester.

Eleven of the 15 GS programs posted a team GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall while 12 programs reached that mark in the spring. Eight of the nine female programs, and four of the six male programs, posted a team GPA of 3.0 or higher for the year. 

Student-athletes who were named to either list will be honored at each sports respective Sun Belt Championship.
