Softball Travels to UTA for Weekend Series

Eagles set to play a doubleheader Saturday, single game Sunday
ARLINGTON, TX - The Georgia Southern softball team travls to Arlington, Texas for a Sun Belt conference series against the Mavericks this weekend. GS (3-3 SBC) will play UTA (2-4 SBC) in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m Central (2 p.m. ET) and then face off again on Sunday in a single game at 12 p.m. Central (1 p.m. ET). UT Arlington enters the weekend with an overall record of 16-13, and are 2-4 in Sun Belt play. Last weekend the Mavericks had a rough time going 0-3 against Louisiana. UTA turned it around when they got back to home turf and ended their three-game losing skid with a midweek 9-1 win against Houston Baptist. This weekend the Mavericks will host the Eagles and look to continue their home-field advantage. The two teams come into this three-game conference series with a 3-3 all-time record.
Batting .367 for the Mavericks this season is sophomore utility player Laura Curry. Curry has played and started in all 29 games and leads the team in hits (33), triples (4), and total bases (47). She is considered one of the toughest players to strikeout, ranking third in the conference and 45th in the nation, recording a strikeout approximately once every 30 at-bats. Freshman catcher/infielder Alleen Garcia is another key player, batting .345 in 58 at-bats. Garcia has 40 hits and three homeruns on the year, and leads the team in slugging percentage with a .569. She posted multiple hits in her last game, going 2-for-3 against Houston Baptist.
In the circle for UTA is sophomore Sam Clakley, who has earned an impressive 1.61 ERA over 19 starts and 22 appearances. Clakley has five shutouts on the year, ranking her third in the Sun Belt and ninth in the nation. She has 74 strikeouts and her team-high 12 wins are the second most in the conference and 23rd most in the nation. Clakley has pitched 11 complete games this year, and last time out she earned the win by only allowing one unearned run on three hits. Also on the pitching staff is senior Sam Montes, who has earned a 3.60 ERA this season on seven starts and 12 appearances. Montes is 3-0 so far this year and ranks second in the Sun Belt and 50th in the nation in walks allowed per seven innings with 1.20. UTA wraps up its homestand with a game against North Texas on Wednesday, March 29 before hitting the road for a three-game conference series at Troy.

Senior Emily Snider is leading the offense with a .380 batting average, 21 RBIs and seven home runs. Lydia Witkowski is second on the team with a .295 average, and right behind her is freshman Mekhia Freeman with a .292 average. Dixie Raley is 7-8 in the circle throughout 85.1 innings of work with a 2.87 ERA and 74 strikeouts.
