Eagles return to action Wednesday at home against CofC
MONROE, La. - The Georgia Southern softball team split a pair of games Saturday with ULM, beating the Warhawks 4-3 in the opener before dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 game in nine innings in the second contest. With ULM's win on Friday, the Warhawks took the three-game series.
GAME ONE
A big third inning for Georgia Southern allowed the Eagles to strike first in game one. Morgan Robinson got the action started with a single to center field, and advanced on a walk to Andrea McKenzie. Freshman Shelby Wilson then stepped up to knocked a double to left center with one out, scoring Robinson and advancing McKenzie to third. Macy Weeks followed up with a single to left field to score McKenzie and give GS a 2-0 lead.
The Warhawks responded in the bottom of the third with a string of hits, but were only able to chip away one run. The Eagles extended their lead in the fourth when Emily Snider was able to score on a wild pitch. In the top of the sixth, a walk to Lydia Witkowski allowed the Eagles to eventually bring around another base runner and extend their lead to 4-1.
The Warhawks threatened again in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Kierra Camp, plating two runs off of a single by Hunter Hogan and bringing the game within a run, but it wasn't enough for the Warhawks as GS was able to close out the game in the seventh, surviving a bases-loaded threat from ULM before getting a ground out to end it.
Snider led the offense with three base hits while Macy Weeks had two. Also picking up hits were Robinson, Wilson, Alesha Mann and Witkowski.
Dixie Raley started the game and threw 3.1 innings for the Eagles. Kierra Camp (5-4) picked up the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings and striking out one.
GAME TWO
Camp and ULM's Melanie Coyne engaged in a pitcher's duel as neither team was able to mount any offense through eight innings.
In the ninth inning, ULM used two singles and a walk to load up the bases before Coyne scored on an error to end the game.
Snider and Mann both had two hits apiece while Freeman had a hit for the GS offense, as well.
Camp was the tough-luck loser as she kept the ULM offense at bay for a majority of the game. The junior went 8 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.
