Trellanie English-Lurry's season-high 12 points lead the Eagles
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern women's basketball team fell to Stony Brook, 68-49, in its final non-conference contest of 2017-18 on Thursday afternoon at Hanner Fieldhouse, dropping its fifth game in a row.
The Seawolves (8-4) hit eight three-pointers and enjoyed a 26-14 edge in points off turnovers in winning their third straight contest. It was the first meeting in school history between the two teams. Georgia Southern (3-8) will now break for the Christmas holidays before opening up Sun Belt Conference play on Friday, December 29th, traveling to Troy for an 8:00 p.m. contest in Troy, Ala.
Stony Brook jumped out to a 19-10 lead in the first quarter, shooting 54 percent from the floor in the opening period. The Eagles cut the gap to six late in the second quarter, 26-20, but the Seawolves scored the final five points of period to take a 31-20 lead into the break. Georgia Southern could not get the deficit into single digits in the second half as Stony Brook put the game away with an 11-3 run to open the fourth quarter.
"Number one thing is turnovers," Head Coach Kip Drown said. "They had 26 points off of turnovers. Then, we put them on the line, and they made 16 points there. That's 42 of their 68 points that came when we didn't get our defense set. When we got our defense set, at times we weren't that bad. The other thing was, we have to jump defensively. I was really disappointed that we didn't jump to the basketball.
"Credit to Stony Brook, they shot it better than they normally shoot it," Coach Drown said. "They hit eight threes. We've got to do a better job on finding the shooters."
Senior Trellanie English-Lurry led the Eagles on the evening with a season-high 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. Rhein Beamon added nine points off the bench. Stony Brook was led offensively by the duo of Jerrell Matthews (20 points) and Shania Johnson (18 points).
The Eagles finished the contest shooting 36.2 percent from the floor (17-of-47), while Stony Brook shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52). Georgia Southern made just 4-of-15 three-pointers (26.7 percent) while the Seawolves hit 8-of-22 threes (36.4 percent). Stony Brook had the edge at the free throw line, hitting 16-of-21 free throws (76.2 percent) while the Eagles made just 11-of-16 free throws (68.8 percent). The Seawolves also won the rebounding battle, 36-26, including a 14-8 edge on the offensive glass.
