Eagles Drop Series Finale at Georgia, 5-1

Georgia Southern faces Georgia Tech on Wednesday in Statesboro

ATHENS, GA. – Georgia Southern dropped a 5-1 decision on Sunday afternoon to Georgia. The Eagles were held to just two hits to lose the opening series of the season. The series loss snaps a run of four-straight series wins over Georgia for the Eagles which dates back to 2005. Georgia Tech comes to J.I. Clements Stadium on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. midweek game that can be seen on ESPN3.

WORDS FROM THE SKIPPER
"Kevin Smith pitched really well for Georgia today," said Head Coach Rodney Hennon. "He did a good job getting ahead in the count and mixing his pitches. We weren't able to get a lot going offensively and that is an area we're going to improve on over the next week. Despite that, we really played good defense as a whole for the three-game series. We had a chance to finish a couple double plays today and they scored both times we didn't finish a double play. Unfortunately when you're struggling offensively, there is a small margin of error and that caught up with us today."

CRUCIAL MOMENTS
BOTTOM 4TH
– A leadoff double for Keegan McGovern opened the door for the first run of the game. LJ Talley drove him in, reaching on a fielder's choice to the right side which allowed McGovern to scamper home.
TOP 5TH – A one-out walk to Cal Baker turned into a run after small ball got him to second base and a couple of miscues by UGA. A wild pitch allowed him to get to third, but a late and high throw by the catcher sailed into left as Baker scooted home to tie the game.
BOTTOM 5TH – UGA scored four runs, two earned in the fifth inning to blow the game open. Kegan McGovern drove in two with his double off the wall in center. Two more scored on Wren's fielding error when he dropped a fly ball for the potential third out.

NOTES
- Jordan Wren, who opened the season 0-for-10 got in the swing of things with a pair of hits in the fourth and sixth innings. He lashed a pair of balls to centerfield to open his hits account at Georgia Southern
- Starting pitcher Brian Eichhorn went 4.0 innings in his collegiate debut, allowing three hits and a run. He also walked one and struck out one but did not factor in the decision.
- Georgia Southern lost the series to the Bulldogs for the first time since 2004 after taking four-straight season series.
- After opening the season on the road, Georgia Southern is back home for their next 10 contests at J.I. Clements Stadium.
