Track and Field feels out the venue of the Conference Championships
STATESBORO, Ga.- The Georgia Southern track and field team is back in action this weekend for the third time this spring, competing in the Samford Open in Birmingham, Alabama, Feb. 12-13. The Eagles go up against 41 teams in the Birmingham CrossPlex with two events on Friday evening-- the 200m dash and the 5000m-- and the rest on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
"We're really excited about going into Birmingham. Birmingham is going to be the site of the Conference Championships and this will be some of the ladies' first times to get a chance to actually see the venue," head coach Kelly Carter said. "It's one of those things where we can get out there and compete as well as preview where they're going to be so they become comfortable when we head back in over a week."
The Eagles had a particularly successful meet at Clemson Jan. 29-30, earning first-place honors in two events. Junior Asha Stegall came in first in the 400m with a time of 57.66 seconds, which is good for fourth in the conference. This weekend, Stegall is set to compete in the 200m and 400m events.
Also at the Bob Pollock Invite, Jasmin Walker came in first for the long jump, and is now ranked fourth in the Sun Belt. The previous meet, she placed second. In addition to competing in the long jump this weekend, Walker will also run the 60m race.
