STATESBORO, Ga. – Following a successful 9-4 2015 season capped by a 58-27 victory over Bowling Green in the GoDaddy Bowl, the Georgia Southern football team was recognized at the Statesboro City Council meeting at City Hall Tuesday morning for its accomplishments over the previous two seasons.
In a proclamation presented to Georgia Southern Director of Athletics
Tom Kleinlein by Mayor Jan Moore, the City of Statesboro honored and recognized the Georgia Southern University Football Team for making one of the most successful transitions into FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) from the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) level.
Within the proclamation, the City of Statesboro recognized and lauded the Eagles' 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championship and 9-3 record as well as the 2015 9-4 season capped by the Eagles' first-ever trip to a bowl game and first-ever bowl win. The proclamation went on to recognize Georgia Southern for finishing the 2015 season No. 1 in the nation for rushing yards per game as well as rushing touchdowns. It also recognized the tremendous effort by Eagle nation in support of the GoDaddy Bowl which was viewed by 2.4 million viewers on ESPN and was the second largest TV viewing audience during the 2015 bowl season.
In addition to recognizing the team for their recent accomplishments, the proclamation also recognized the hiring of incoming head coach
Tyson Summers who was officially announced as the 10
th head football coach in the history of the program back on Saturday, Dec. 26. The event drew a packed house inside the Ted Smith Family Football Center on campus.
