Georgia Southern piles up 516 yards of offense, scores 28 points after halftime to even record at 2-2
STATESBORO - Georgia Southern football piled up 516 yards of offense to even its record on the season, defeating Maine by a 45-17 score on Saturday evening at Paulson Stadium.
The Eagles (2-2) improved to 2-0 at home with the win, while Maine falls to 0-4 on the year. Georgia Southern will be next in action on Saturday, September 27, visiting James Madison for a 1:30 p.m. Sun Belt contest in Harrisonburg, Va. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as the Georgia Southern Sports Network.
Georgia Southern led 17-14 at halftime thanks to three-yard touchdown runs by OJ Arnold and Dalen Cobb, as well as a 22-yard field goal by Tripp Bryant. Maine had a 27-yard touchdown run by quarterback Carter Peevy and a 76-yard interception return by Devin Vaught off of a tipped ball.
A trick play helped the Eagles to their first score of the second half as Cobb connected with Camden Brown on a 44-yard pass to the Maine half-yard line. Freshman QB Weston Bryan then ran for his first collegiate touchdown on the next play to make the score 24-14.
Maine's Samuel Tremblay kicked a 33-yard field goal with 5:59 left in the third quarter to make it a one-score game, 24-17, but the Eagles quickly responded with a five-play, 74-yard touchdown drive, capped by Cobb's second TD of the game, a 25-yard pass from JC French IV to make the score 31-17.
A muffed punt by the Black Bears, recovered by Jackson Wheeler, led to a 12-yard touchdown pass from Arnold to Brown with 14:01 left in the fourth quarter. It was the fourth straight game in which Brown has caught a touchdown pass, only the second Eagle to do so in Georgia Southern football history. Teddy Craft caught a touchdown pass in five straight games during the 2004 season.
The Eagles then capped the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run by Jamarian Samuel, his first collegiate touchdown, midway through the fourth quarter.
JC French IV finished the night 19-for-31 passing for 253 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Brown had six catches for a career-high 118 yards receiving and a touchdown, while Arnold finished the night with 85 yards and a touchdown on the ground, in addition to his touchdown pass. MJ Stroud led the defense with two and a half sacks and another tackle for loss in his five tackles on the night.
Georgia Southern's 516 yards of total offense were the most by the Eagles since putting up 530 yards against Ball State on September 23, 2023.
