Matt Mierzejewski (21 rds, 73.68)
Archer Price (20 rds, 74.40)
The Eagles will compete in their first Sun Belt Championship at Raven Golf Club, looking for their ninth conference team title. Georgia Southern won four titles as a member of the Southern Conference and four as a member of the TAAC. The Eagles won the SoCon team title last season by a stroke over Chattanooga, and Charlie Martin, Scott Wolfes and Will Evans all finished in the top-10.
The winner of the Sun Belt gets an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, thought it appears the Eagles are in pretty good shape for an at-large bid as well.
Georgia Southern is coming off a ninth-place finish in the Mason Rudolph Championship April 5. The field featured eight teams in the top-50 according to Golfstat.
Scott Wolfes leads the Eagles with a 71.00 stroke average in 26 rounds this season, and the senior has shot 70 or under in 14 rounds. He has 14 top-5 and 21 top-10 finishes in his career and has placed in the top-20 in 29 of his 43 collegiate starts.
Kim Koivu has been in the lineup for every tournament this spring and is averaging 73.35 strokes a round with two top-15 finishes. Matt Mierzejewski makes his third straight appearance and owns a 73.86 stroke average. The senior has three top-20 finishes this season.
Archer Price has played in six straight tournaments and posted a T-5 finish in the Wendy's Kiawah Classic in November, while Andrew Klasing, who ranks second on the team with a 73.33 scoring average, will play in the lineup for the first time this season. The junior played in two tournaments as an individual and tied for 25th at the Invitational at the Ocean Course in September.
The Raven Club will be an ocean-style course, which the Eagles are very familiar with. Georgia Southern took third at the Invitational at the Ocean Course and second at the Wendy's Kiawh Invitational in the fall.
"It will be a grind-it-out 72-75 type of tournament, and we've done well at those this year," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "In preparation for this event, we've played ocean style courses this season and had success there. We know we can handle it, it's just a matter of executing."
With not much familiarity with the course, the Eagles have been working on their short games for the last three weeks or so.
"We don't know about the particulars of the course, so we've been alternating clubs off the tee and stressing short game," said Collins. "We need to keep relying on the fundamentals this program is built on and execute those, and we'll be where we want to be at the end."
Georgia Southern is paired with Troy and Georgia State and will tee off hole 1 at 8:15 a.m. (CT) in Sunday's opening round.
