Chanticleers Too Much For Eagles

Women's Tennis Falls 2-5 To Coastal Carolina

Statesboro, Ga. –  The Women's Tennis team fell 2-5 Wednesday to the visiting Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.  After losing the doubles point, the Eagles were unable to rally in singles matches to earn the necessary 4 points to clinch the match.  With the loss, the Eagles end a 4 match win streak and fall to 7-3 on the season.

"I commend Coastal Carolina for playing great tennis today," said Head Coach Michele Stanford.  "They are a tough team, and unfortunately losing the doubles point got us off to a rough start.  In singles, we had some close matches, but we weren't able to step up during the key pressure points.  We will take the lessons learned today, and put them into practice before heading to Mobile for conference matches next week."

In Doubles, Coastal was able to win 2 matches as Francisca Norregaard and Daria Vasekina fell 1-6 to Honami Yazawa and Sara Bondar while Giulia Riepe and Jordana Klein were defeated 3-8 by Libby Scott and Marie Babayan.

With the doubles point already decided, the No. 1 tandem of Mary Phillips Smith and Anne Kurzweil gutted out a victory over Cari Berry and Romane Delay 8-6, but the Chanticleers would enter singles matches up 1-0 in the match.

The 4 hour marathon match would first see Scott claim victory of Smith at No. 2 6-0, 6-3.  Up 2-0, Berry would add another point for the Chanticleers when she setback Norregaard 6-3.

Kurzweil, the stand-out for the Eagles in the match, defeated Delay at the No. 3 position 6-3, 6-4 to keep the Eagles in it with a score of 3-1.

The match-winner would go to Coastal's Babayan as she was victorious over Vasekina at No. 5 6-1, 7-6.

Lone senior, Jordana Klein, fought off Yazawa at No. 1 to earn the final point of the day for the Eagles 6-3, 3-6, 10-6.

Riepe would go on to fall to Bondar at No. 4 6-7, 6-3, 10-4 to seal the Eagles fate at 2-5 for the team match.

The Eagles will return to Sun Belt Conference action Friday March 30th when they travel to Mobile, Alabama for a weekend show down with Appalachian State.  Saturday March 31st will feature the Eagles against the Troy University Trojans.
