Deland, Fla. – The Eagles, looking to rebound after falling to Stetson a day ago, were ultimately setback by the Florida Atlantic Owls Saturday 3-4 in a neutral site match. After claiming the doubles point, Georgia Southern (3-2) was only able to capture 2 of the 4 singles matches which led to the Owls (2-1) win.
In doubles competition,
Anne Kurzweil and
Mary Phillips Smith combined at the No. 1 position to defeat Taylor Briggs and Stephanie Cardullo 6-5. The tandem of
Jordana Klein and
Giulia Riepe got the win over Jennifer Leib and Marisa Ruiz 6-4 at No. 3 doubles. Unable to make it a perfect 3-3,
Daria Vasekina and
Francisca Norregaard fell to Catalina Ene and Lyndsey Boos 3-6.
Heading in to the singles with a 1-0 match advantage over the Owls, the Eagles were met with formidable opponents and fell in 4 of 6 matches. Claiming singles victories for the Eagles were Klein at the No. 1 position, and Kurzweil at No. 3. Klein defeated Cardiullo 6-1, 6-2 while Kurzweil dispatched Boos 7-5, 6-3.
Falling at No. 2 singles was Smith. She was outlasted by Ene and fell 4-6, 3-6. At No. 4 singles, Riepe was defeated by Ruiz 6-1, 5-7, 2-6.
Vasekina lost to Bianca Biglione in the No. 5 position 2-6, 3-6 while teammate Norregaard was dispatched by Brigga 6-7, 3-6.
With the loss, the Eagles drop to 3-2 on the season, and will return to the confines of Wallis Tennis Center when they challenge Kennesaw State on Saturday, February 14th at 12 p.m.
