EAGLES AT A GLANCE
- The Georgia Southern Eagles opened the 2015 campaign and their first season in the Sun Belt Conference with a series sweep of Bethune-Cookman.
- The Eagles swept their first opening weekend series since 2012 and tallied their fifth-straight opening weekend series victory.
- GS is one of two Sun Belt teams to open the year with a 3-0 record. South Alabama is the other.
- Kody Adams ranks eighth in the conference with a .455 batting average after the first weekend of play.
STORYLINES
- GS will face its second 2014 NCAA Regional participant in Georgia Tech Tuesday. The contest will air nationally on ESPN3.
- Georgia Tech posted a 37-27 record in 2014 and won the ACC Tournament to advance to the Oxford Regional.
- Freshman Will Hudgins tallied a hit in all three games of the opening-weekend series and was 4 for 9 in the series with three RBI, including the game-winning sac fly on Sunday.
- Evan Challenger returned to the mound and earned his second career victory after missing all of 2014 with Tommy John surgery.
- Charles Sheffield will face his old team on Tuesday. Sheffield was on the roster for two seasons at Georgia Tech before transferring to Georgia Perimeter College.
BETHUNE-COOKMAN RECAP
- Georgia Southern swept the series from Bethune-Cookman 3-0, 12-8, 9-8.
- The Eagles shut out the Wildcats in the series opener 3-0 behind a strong pitching performance from Evan Challenger, who carried a no hitter into the fifth inning.
- The final two games in the series featured a combined 12 errors between the two teams. The Eagles were able to take advantage of Wildcat mistakes and posted big innings.
- GS scored five runs in the third inning and four in the sixth inning to win Saturday's game 12-8. The Eagles scored seven runs in the second inning on Sunday before BCU rallied to tie the game.
GRIFFIN'S HOT START
- Senior catcher and Johnny Bench Award nominee, Chase Griffin has three two-hit games in as many games this season.
- A year ago, Griffin tallied 15 multi-hit games in 59 games played.
- Griffin is hitting .429 with two RBI and a double after the first weekend of play.
- In 2014 he hit .258 with 15 doubles, 41 RBI and drove in the game-winning run in the SoCon Tournament with a walk-off single.
RUBBER ARM RICHMAN
- Jason Richman led the NCAA in pitching appearances last season after throwing in 47 of the team's 63 games.
- Richman pitched in all six Southern Conference Tournament games and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after allowing one earned run over a combined 13.1 innings.
- The now junior was an All-Southern Conference Second Team selection, Jewish Sports Review All-American and a Tom Walter/Pete Frates College Baseball Inspiration Award winner.
- Richman has appeared in two games this season and is quickly approaching the top-10 for GS career game appearances.
- A year ago Georgia Southern posted their eighth 20 plus win season since the renovations of J.I. Clements Stadium in 2005.
- The Eagles went 21-10 at home in 2014 and posted a season-long 9 game home winning streak.
- GS won 20 or more at home for the first time since 2011.
- The Eagles are off to a 3-0 start at home in 2015.
