The Eagles open the season Thursday at 7 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse.
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern men's basketball coach Mark Byington announced today that Devonte Boykins, Devince Boykins, Jake Allsmiller and Mike Hughes will serve as team captains this season.
"Our captains are voted on by the student-athletes so it's a big honor to be placed on them by their teammates," said Byington. "They are all going to be asked to be mature beyond their years. Having three sophomores be captains is unusual, but they all do have the experience and leadership qualities."
The Eagles open their season with an exhibition contest against Middle Georgia Thursday at 7 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse. Admission is free, and Georgia Southern is hosting a canned food drive. Fans are asked to bring a canned good to donate to the Statesboro Food Bank.
Devonte Boykins, Allsmiller and Hughes saw significant playing time as freshman last season. Hughes averaged 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds a game, started every contest and finished second on the team in assists (70) and steals (40). Allsmiller started 19 contests and canned 40 3-pointers, while Boykins played in 25 contests.
Devince Boykins is the older brother of Devonte and transferred to Georgia Southern after graduating from Marshall. The senior is a graduate student at Georgia Southern and eligible to compete for the Eagles this season. He played in 85 career games for the Thundering Herd.
Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at GSEagles.com/tickets. Season ticket options are available for both general admission and reserved seating. Fans can enjoy chair-back seats in the reserved sections for $90 a season ticket for either men's or women's basketball.
