Eagles embark on 2015 campaign beginning on February 7th
NEW ORLEANS, LA. – Sophomore outfielder Taylor Rogers was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Softball team while the Eagles were picked fifth following a vote of the league's head coaches as the new season is just over a week away. Rogers, the defending Southern Conference Freshman of the Year was one of just three sophomores named to the 15-member team.
Rogers hit .381 a year ago while reaching base at a .405 clip as a freshman leadoff hitter for the Eagles. The left-handed slap hitter legged out 48 hits, while stealing 16 bases, and scoring 25 runs. A native of Dacula, Ga., Rogers earned first team All-SoCon honors last year and a spot on the All-Freshman Team in addition to Freshman of the Year honors. She was the Eagles' designated player last year, and is poised to make a move to the outfield for the 2015 campaign.
Georgia Southern enters its first season in the Sun Belt Conference coming off a 35-21 season which included a Southern Conference Regular Season Championship with a 15-6 mark. The quest for a third-straight Tournament Championship came up short in the semifinals. The Eagles return seven starting position players and two members of the pitching staff.
Georgia Southern's move to the Sun Belt will be a step up in competition for the Eagles. In 2014, the Southern Conference finished as the 14th ranked league in terms of Conference RPI while the Sun Belt was ranked fifth.
The 2015 campaign starts on February 7th as the Eagles travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to play in the Renegade Classic. The Eagles open the tournament against No. 5 Florida State at Noon, and face No. 6 Kentucky at 2:30 p.m.
