STATESBORO, Ga. – The Sun Belt Conference announced its three-year schedule for league championships today, and Georgia Southern will host three Sun Belt Championships in the next three seasons.
Georgia Southern will serve as the host for the 2014 Men's Soccer Championship at Eagle Field, the 2015 Volleyball Championship at Hanner Fieldhouse and the 2017 Baseball Championship at J.I. Clements Stadium. The Men's and Women's Basketball Championships will be contested in New Orleans and hosted by the Sun Belt at Lakefront Arena for the next two seasons.
"We are honored to host these championships," said Georgia Southern Director of Athletics Tom Kleinlein. "It is a great way to showcase our university while having a positive economic impact on the communities that support Georgia Southern."
The Men's Soccer Championship will be the first for the Sun Belt since 1996 as the league is reintroducing the sport, beginning in 2014. Full-time members Appalachian State, Georgia Southern and Georgia State will play alongside affiliate members Hartwick, Howard, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology in a single round robin schedule. The Sun Belt previously sponsored men's soccer from 1976 to 1996, and the first Sun Belt Championship in any sport was the 1976 Men's Soccer Championship. It will also be the first time Georgia Southern has ever hosted its league's Men's Soccer Championship.
The 2015 Volleyball Championship will be the first time the Eagles have hosted their league tournament since 2005, while the 2017 Baseball Championship will mark the first time the Eagles have hosted their league tournament since 1987, when Georgia Southern hosted the Trans America Athletic Conference (TAAC) Baseball Championship.
Georgia Southern begins competition in the Sun Belt Conference beginning in the upcoming 2014-15 season.
