Six relay teams and three individuals head to Gainesville this weekend
STATESBORO, Ga. – Participating in one of the nation's preeminent meets, the Georgia Southern Track and Field team heads to Gainesville, Fla., this weekend for the Florida Relays. Events for Georgia Southern begin on Friday at the James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track. Georgia Southern will travel six relay teams with multiple entries in both the 4X400m and 4X200m.
Three Eagles made the invitation list for the individual events Friday with junior Jasmin Walker competing in both the Long Jump and the 100m Dash. Georgia Southern record holder in the 800m, Sherril McFarlane looks to further reduce her time in that event this weekend while Dana Edwards has her eye on the 400m Hurdles mark.
With inclement weather having an impact on the Eagles' outdoor schedule this spring, Saturday will be only the second time the 4X100m Relay team will see live competition this year. Coach Marlo Mincey reorganized the order of the race this season with two members of last year's conference championship squad in Jasmin Walker and Alyssa Felton and the addition of Aarian Tipton and Jordan Fordham.
"It (the weather) has made it possible for us to get in a lot more practice and this extra time has given us the opportunity to get some quality reps, of course, it's hard to recreate race atmosphere, but we're doing our best," said Head Track and Field Coach Marlo Mincey. "Florida Relays is a highly competitive event and quite a few Olympians will be competing this weekend. We're really happy to get our Eagles into this meet, both for our relays and individuals, and we're trying to get those regional qualifying marks."
